Danube Wildlife appeals to Ukrainian President for pardon
Appeal for pardon
By your Decree N117 you sentenced to death the last few spieces of Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius
tenuirostris), nearly extinct.
The president of Ukraine, violating the formal logic, international obligations, Constitution and
laws of Ukraine, by it's decree opened fire at defenceless birds of the planet.
On April, 25, 2004, at the marine sand bar near Bystre the following birds nesting were reported: 948
seagulls, 6 gray lag goose (Anser anser), 550 common terns and sandwich terns, little terns, 32
avocets, 6 spoonbills, 8 stilts, 4 plovers, 4 oyster catchers, 435 other birds. Almost all birds are
listed in the Red book of Ukraine.
Among other doomed birds - the representatives of International Red List IUCN: 3 Dalmatian pelican
and 25 great white, 25 pelican, 25 pygmy cormorant. Only one pair of white-tailed sea eagle returned
to Ukraine to die.
German company Josef Moebious is participating in this crime, going to
dredge the Black Sea and Bystroe estuary bottom during the fish
and bird breeding time.
We ask you to stop the murder - don't let the birds and fish youth
die under dredging vessels! Don't let sandsucker suck up the Black sea
and Danube wildlife! Call off your decree allowing construction at the
Danube reserve!
We remind you that for 40 years before you came to power this area was
conserved.
