"Nuclear and Radiation Safety" Program

There is little doubt that radiation Safety in Russia is one of the pressing problems touching upon interests of almost all layers of society.

Intensive development of nuclear complex in the period ot military opposition has led to a situation that now we encounter with many unresolved problems relating to radiation safety:

First and foremost, these are problems in connection with utilization of radioactive waste of both military and civic origin.
In addition, a considerable part of the Russian territory is contaminated to this or that degree by radioactive substances. These are nuclear power unit waste, and vast areas suffered from the Chernobyl accident, and impact of nuclear military and industrial complex activity.
Many unresolved problems are related to nuclear power (safety of nuclear stations, reconstruction and removal of functioning nuclear power units from service).

The diverse problems generated by nuclear technologies, cause anxiety in a significant part of the present-day society.

Nearly the entire period of development of the nuclear industry passed under conditions of almost complete closeness. Unfortunately, even now many problems, generated by nuclear technologies, remain beyond the public field of vision.

Many programs relating to radiation safety and touching upon interests of the entire society are discussed only by a small range of professionals causing a negative response in the wide public, leading to mistrust even in case of taking weighted solutions.

Program "Nuclear and Radiation Safety" was initiated by the Socio-Ecological Union in compliance with the decision of the 6th SEU conference in december 1997. The program, supported by the Winston Foundation, functions at the Center for Russian Environmental Policy.

The main purpose of the program is establishing a mechanism which would be able to ensure a wide discussion of nuclear problems, to make available more information to the population in the sphere of radiation safety to ensure an efficient dialogue between the public and federal structures thus improving control over decision-making in the field of nuclear technologies.

In the framework of this program it is envisaged

to establish a reliable network for exchange of information on radiation and nuclear safety between NGOs:
to open and support via Internet a conference on issues of radiation safety;
to submit projects and materials on nuclear and radiation safety for wide discussing.

All parties concerned are invited for a wide participation in the Program.
